Manchester United are poised to battle it out for the signature of Barcelona forward Eidur Gudjohnsen.Gudjohnsen, who only joined Barca last summer in a £8.2million deal from Chelsea, struggled to nail down a regular place in Frank Rijkaard’s first team in the recently completed campaign.Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson could be ready to offer Gudjohnsen a lifeline as the Scot looks to bolster the Premier League champions’ strike-force ahead of the new campaign.

Manchester United have not made an approach for Sampdoria striker Fabio Quagliarella but are interested in the Italian international, according to his agent.Reports have linked the 23-year-old with a move to Old Trafford but Quagliarella’s representative Silvio Pagliari said no direct contact had been made so far.

Manchester United have scored a major summer transfer coup by swooping for highly-rated Portugal-based duo Anderson and Nani. Most of the best clubs in Europe, including Chelsea and Real Madrid, have been linked with one of the pair at some stage over the past few months.

Manchester United have confirmed that England midfielder Owen Hargreaves will join them from Bayern Munich on 1 July. United have not yet disclosed the fee for the 26-year-old but it is believed to be in the region of £17m.
